Receding Gums Treatment

Many things happen as people grow older. Receding gums are one of them. However, aging is not the only cause of receding gums. This is a common occurrence and can happen for a variety of reasons.

Normally the gums cover the root of the tooth. When the root is exposed, the gums have receded. Also known as gingival recession, this happens with nearly 90% of people over 65 years of age. Gingival recession can happen to many teeth or just one or two.

The problem with receding gums comes from exposing the roots to a greater possibility of decay and infection. Without general dental care, these issues can lead to tooth loss. Receding gums can also cause sensitivity or pain in the teeth. Early treatment can alleviate these problems.

One of the main causes of receding gums comes from the gums physically being worn down by brushing the teeth too hard and/or using a stiff toothbrush. Lip piercings affecting the gum can also be a factor. Misaligned teeth are another physical reason why gums may recede.

The other cause has to do with a reaction of the immune system where the gum tissue is inflamed. This is often the result of periodontal disease. Some individuals have thinner or more delicate gums causing them to be more susceptible to gum disease.

Relief for Bleeding or Swollen Gums

When periodontal disease is the reason for gum recession, the gums are often swollen and will bleed when you brush or floss your teeth. Treatment is available at Parklane Family Dentistry. Depending on how severe the problem is, you may only need a thorough cleaning of your teeth and possibly antibiotics to fight any infection present. In more severe cases, surgery may be required. In a few instances, tissue grafting may be indicated.

If you have receding gums, contact Parklane Family Dentistry today for a consultation appointment so you can be examined by Dr. Vashisht.
